What Do Our Worship Songs Say About God?

"Lex orandi, lex credendi." A friend reminded me of this phrase today. It is Latin for "the rule of prayer is the rule of belief", or in plainer words: "the way you pray or worship is the way you believe."

So…what do our songs and prayers say about what we believe about God? If we examined our lyrics what would they tell us about God? Could they be applied to a generic deity or is there anything uniquely Christian about the God they depict?

This same friend who reminded me of "lex orandi, lex credendi" also pointed out the study done at the University of Notre Dame which discovered most young people believe in "moralistic, therepeutic deism". In other words, the popular religion of America is a belief in a God who wants us to feel good and do good things. Has our shallow contemporary worship contributed to that? What have we done to refute it or present or more robust image of God?

Here's a link to a specific discussion on how we acknowledge (or fail to) the Trinity in our songs and worship today: SongWriting Conversation.
